Self-concept is one of the fundamentals when it comes down to achieving our goals. Self-concept is the perception we have of ourselves, which what makes it so important, as it influences many areas of our personal life. After reading this article, you will know what self-concept is and why it is so important to take care of.

What is self-concept?

Our self-concept is formed by our beliefs and assumptions about ourselves. Self-concept consists out of 3 main components: self-image, self-esteem and the ideal self.

Self-image is how we perceive ourselves. This includes our physical appearance, characteristics and the role we fulfill in our life. These roles can vary from being a parent to being a student.

Our self-esteem determines how we perceive our own value or worth. Self-esteem is also known as confidence, and is based upon on our personal opinions and beliefs.

Our ideal self is the person we desire to be. This part of our self-concept is based on our personal desires and hopes. Pursuing your ideal self is one of the greatest motivators when it comes down to enhancing your self-concept.

Self-concept and manifestation

So, why is self-concept so important when it comes down to manifestation?

Because our self-concept influences our internal world — our thoughts, emotions and beliefs. If we struggle with negative assumptions about ourselves or about what we wish to achieve, it will slow down our manifestation process. In order to manifest, we need to be aligned with what we want: mentally, emotionally and energetically. This means we have to think, feel and act like we already are the version of ourselves that is worthy and capable of what we want to do or achieve.

Ways to improve your self-concept

In short, the most effective way to enhance your self-concept is to get to know your ideal self and eventually become them. This is obviously easier said than done, so I have listed 3 valuable tips and methods that will help you get started!

Get to know your worth

In order to receive, we need to feel worthy of our manifestation — so we better remind ourselves of what we deserve! An effective way to improve your self-concept is by writing down what makes you happy, what things you value and what your talents are.

Seriously, start putting yourself on a pedestal!

If you notice you start putting yourself down, try to challenge these intrusive thoughts and find out where they stem from. If you struggle with a low self-concept, it’s important to repeat this practice daily. This could be in the form of journaling or keeping a diary. The goal of this method is to get rid of negative self-talk and replace it with telling yourself you are worthy of what you desire (and also perfectly capable of achieving what you want). Revision Method (with affirmations)

This is a very simple method that you can do that will help you enhance your self-concept.

First, start writing down all of the negative assumptions and/or beliefs you have about either yourself or what you wish to achieve. I recommend writing it down on paper instead of using any devices. If you wish to find love in your life, these negative beliefs could be “True love doesn’t exist” or “I am not meant to have a loving relationship”. In terms of money or career, these negative beliefs could vary from “Money is the root of all evil” or “I am not good enough for the job I want”.

After writing all of these negative beliefs down, I want you to strike through them and write down the exact opposite of what’s stated. You are going to change all of these limiting beliefs into statements that are aligned with your goal! It should look like this:

It’s a very simple exercise, but it is very effective. Not only have you recognized your manifestation blocks, you already have transformed them on paper. This exercise is recommended when you are worrying or doubting your manifestations process, as it helps you release negative thoughts. You can do this exercise as many times as you want.

Practice self-care

As logical as it sounds, I still had to include self-care on this list. Self-care comes in many forms: it can be treating yourself to a delicious meal, take a super relaxing bath or even enjoying your favorite TV show. If you have made the list mentioned in tip 1, you should have an idea of where to start! Caring for your mind and body is extremely important — and not only in terms of manifestation or spirituality. It helps us recharge and relax, and, it will actually help us feel better. So, do something kind for yourself today.
